Good tool, slow support

I used the AI photo to pixel art converter for a project recently. The results were pretty impressive for the most part; it really nailed the pixelated look I was going for. Exporting in high-resolution was smooth. My main gripe was with customer service. I had a question about the licensing for commercial use, and it took a few days to get a clear answer. The tool itself is solid, but they could improve their response time.

Consistent results, minor bug

I've been using PixelMe on and off for about a year now, mainly for the game asset generator and the sprite sheet creator. This last time, I needed to convert some illustrations into pixel art, and the AI photo to pixel art converter worked just as reliably as it always has. The output quality is consistently good, which is why I keep coming back. I did notice a small bug with the color palette optimizer where it sometimes didn't apply the custom palette correctly on the first try, but a quick refresh fixed it. Overall, still a reliable tool.

Made cool social media pics

So I just wanted to make some funky pixelated profile pictures for my social media. I tried the social media pixel portraits tool and it was super easy. Just uploaded a photo, picked a style, and boom, pixel art. It actually looked pretty good, way better than I expected. No issues with downloading or anything. Just a smooth experience all around.

Great value for the Pro

I was looking for a cost-effective way to get some pixel art for a small game I'm making. I decided to try the premium subscription after seeing the annual plan discount. It felt like a good deal. Being able to use the character sprite creator and the batch image pixelator really saved me a lot of time and money compared to hiring an artist or trying to do it all by hand. It was definitely worth the purchase for my budget.

I'm worried about uploading my original art. Do they own my stuff if I use their tool?

T Tara C. 3 weeks ago
Nah, pretty sure you keep the rights to your art. They're just providing the tool. That's standard for these types of services.

I've used it for my personal projects and never had an issue. It's your art, they just process it for you.

can you upload illustrations or is it just for photos? I have some drawings I want to pixelate.

S Shane 1 month ago
Nah, it works with both! I've put in drawings and photos, both came out pretty cool.

Yeah, it's not just photos. They mention transforming 'photos and illustrations' on their site. So your drawings should be fine.

Is PixelMe actually better than something like Aseprite for pixel art? Or is it just for quick conversions?

A Amber Marsh 1 month ago
It's not really 'better' than Aseprite in the same way. Aseprite is a full editor. PixelMe is more for taking an existing image and making it pixel art, or generating patterns. Good for starting points.

Totally different tools. PixelMe is for quick AI conversion and generating stuff. Aseprite is for manual, detailed pixel by pixel work. They complement each other more than compete directly, if you do both.

Is there any way to get a discount on the premium plan? Like a code or something?

G Gwen Kim 1 month ago
Sometimes they have annual billing discounts, saves you like 20% afaik. No specific coupon codes usually floating around though for general use.

I've seen promo code fields at checkout for pro plans, but I think those are more for specific campaigns. Most people just go with the annual savings.

Thinking of getting the premium sub. Does it really help with making stuff for games, like sprites and all?

R Rosa 1 month ago
I've used it for some indie stuff and it's pretty solid. The character sprite creator is decent, but you might still need to tweak things in Aseprite for super detailed animations.

how long does it take to actually generate something? like if I upload a picture, is it instant or does it take a while?

A Alex K. 3 weeks ago
Super fast in my experience. Like, almost instant. The AI works quick.

It's pretty quick. A few seconds usually. Depends on your internet speed and the complexity of the image maybe, but for me it's always been fast.
